Welcome to the UCI Academic Talent Search

What is the Academic Talent Search (ATS)?

The ATS is a testing program designed primarily for students in grades 6 through 10. It identifies students with extraordinary mathematical and/or verbal reasoning abilities, and offers an opportunity to sharpen test-taking skills in preparation for the PSAT and SAT Reasoning Test well in advance of the crucial junior and senior years of high school. The ATS also assists participants in their placement in UCI Gifted Student Network programs. All students receive a score report on their math, critical reading and writing performance; and receive an extensive four-page informative report with recommendations on areas for future improvements.

Who is eligible for the Academic Talent Search?

UC Irvine asks educators to identify students who will be in the sixth, seventh, eighth, ninth, or tenth grades as of January 2010 who demonstrate special academic talent, and inform them about ATS. The program is open to students who meet at least one of the criteria listed below. Students who have/have been:
-
identified as eligible or GATE (gifted and talented education) services at their school, OR;
-
scored at the 90th percentile or higher on a standardized achievement or aptitude test of mathematical or verbal reasoning ability. Subtest scores such as computation, logic, comprehension or spelling as well as total composite scores in reading, math, science, etc. are acceptable, OR;
-
achieved a score of “Advanced” in at least one area of the California Standards Test (CST), OR;
-
nominated by a teacher, counselor or principal.

What are the benefits of participating in the Academic Talent Search?

ATS participants receive test practice and information on their math and verbal reasoning skills that may open doors to new and exciting honors opportunities. Participants also receive:
-
a score report that compares by grade level their verbal, mathematical, and general reasoning ability (as measured by the PSAT) with that of other students in the Academic Talent Search Program.
-
recognition at an Academic Talent Search awards ceremony if among the top-scoring participants.
-
information describing education programs available to academically superior students, including the UCI Gifted Students Academy and other University of California academic enrichment programs.
-
consideration for scholarships to UC Irvine's summer academic enrichment programs.
